NÄKYVÄKSI / IN FOCUS is an incubator aimed at female filmmakers who are debuting with their first feature length fiction film, documentary film or fictional TV series. IN FOCUS is managed by Women in Film & Television Finland and it has received funding of 190 000 euros from the Finnish Cultural Foundation. This funding is aimed at projects that increase artistic quality, reach new audiences and change existing production models. The incubator is launched at the beginning of 2018 and it will run until mid-2019.
IN FOCUS incubator was sparked off based on research findings that reveal that female filmmakers' projects tend to be hindered after the initial script development phase. In Finland, where the film industry is mainly financed by non-recoupable public funding, on average only 24% of the funding is granted to the production of female-originated films. These findings, which prove there is no equal access for women into the film industry by any standards, sparked off a countermeasure, a comprehensive script and project development incubator based on gender equality and diversity. IN FOCUS provides a structured and supported work environment in which women's projects cross the bridge from script to production. The four selected filmmakers will work on their projects for six months in paid employment.
The incubator works in close partnership with Aalto University, WIFT Nordic and POWR Pitching Forum at Baltic Event, among others. IN FOCUS is managed by two experienced filmmakers: screenwriter, Doctor of Arts Raija Talvio and creative producer, Master of Arts and Master of Creative Media Jenni Koski.
